What “Vitalistic” Chiropractic Actually Means — And Why I Practice This Way

People sometimes see “holistic and vitalistic chiropractor” on my website and aren’t totally sure what vitalistic chiropractic actually means beyond sounding nice. Fair question. Let me actually explain it, because it’s the reason I practice the way I do, not just a phrase on a page.

There are, broadly, two philosophies in chiropractic. One is mechanistic: your spine is basically a machine, something is out of alignment, you adjust the specific part that’s out of place, and you’re done. It treats the body like a car — fix the part that’s broken, move on.

Vitalistic care starts from a different place. The idea is that your body has an inherent, intelligent capacity to heal and regulate itself — through your nervous system — and the chiropractor’s job isn’t just to fix one joint, it’s to remove whatever is interfering with your body’s own ability to function well. A misaligned vertebra isn’t just a mechanical problem; it’s something that can interfere with the nerve signals running through it, which affects a lot more than just the spot that hurts.

In practice, this changes what a visit with me actually looks like. I’m not just asking “where does it hurt” and adjusting that one spot. I’m looking at your whole spine, how you move, your posture, sometimes your stress levels and sleep, because all of that affects how well your nervous system is functioning. Two patients who come in with the same complaint might get genuinely different care from me, because what’s actually driving their pain is different.

I’ll be honest about something: I’m not a fan of the “crack and go” model some clinics run, where you’re in and out in five minutes and adjusted like you’re on an assembly line. There’s a place for quick, efficient care, but if that’s all a visit ever is, you’re not getting the whole picture of what’s actually going on in your body. I’d rather spend the time to understand why something keeps happening than just keep resetting the same joint every few weeks without ever asking why it keeps going out.

This philosophy is also why I lean on things like the initial full-system assessment rather than jumping straight into treatment on day one — I actually want to know what I’m working with before I start.

If that approach resonates with you — wanting to understand the “why,” not just get a quick fix — that’s exactly the kind of patient The Flow Chiropractic is built for.
